Impact of motorization on NMT

One of the important issues is how to prevent the deterioration of
conditions for non-motorized transport caused by increasing car ownership in
developing countries. This deterioration takes the form of physical
encroachment (new roads and car parks are often built at the expense of
pedestrian/cyclist space), severance of NMT links, traffic management
measures favoring motorized modes as well as increased pollution and safety
hazard. Unless special care is taken, this will inevitably lead to the
decline in NMT use.

I suppose that this problem is related to all four proposed research themes
but perhaps it would be worthwhile to list it somewhere.
