Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a major instrument to promote
climate
change mitigation projects in developing countries. It was set up under
the
Kyoto Protocol and allows developed countries to meet parts of their
greenhouse
reduction targets by investing in emissions reducing projects in
developing
countries. Up to now, the transport sector has seen only little
investment in
CDM projects as methodological requirements are rather restrictive. The
TransMilenio -- the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Bogotá/Colombia
-- was
the first transport CDM project approved under the Kyoto Protocol. BRT
projects
appear to have a high CDM potential worldwide.<span style="">

module, prepared by Dr. Jürg M. Grütter, summarises the core issues of
CDM
transport projects and presents the Transmilenio BRT as a case study.
Dr.
Grütter has worked on climate change projects in more than 30 countries
worldwide. He is the author of the first approved large-scale CDM
transport
methodology BRT projects and the author of the only registered CDM
transport
project (TransMilenio)<o:p> </o:p></span></p>

cooperation with World Bank delivered a 3-day training course in Pune,
sponsored by the Ministry of Urban Development, and related to the </span><span

Training on public transport day and carfree week was held in Beijing
during
April 20, 2007 in Guoyi Hotel in Beijing. The course was delivered
during 1
day, to support the Ministry of Construction’s initiative to develop a
public
transport week during September 17-22, 2007, which will include a car
free day.
There will also be a follow-up meeting of this event around July or
August
2007. Trainers for this course were from various organizations. From
GTZ,
Manfred Breithaupt, Oscar Diaz, Eric Britton and Carlos F. Pardo gave
presentations (Eric Britton via videolink), while Mr Sam Zimmerman from
World
Bank was also a trainer. Further, Ministry of Construction contacted Mr
Jason
Chang, Zhang Lingge and Kwon Oh Sung to give presentations on their
experiences
on related topics.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

16-18, 2007. This course took up the more recent discussions in China

future urban development and its relation to urban transport
development in
particular, and highlighted the international discussion on sustainable
urban
transport development. More than 60 participants took part in the
training
course, and international and Chinese trainers delivered presentations.
