Message-ID: First of its Kind Referendum to Make Campus Car Free in Punjab. This would certainly send a strong message to authorities, from Campus to neighbourhood ...to city...A very good start.. Regards, Navdeep Asija ====== CHANDIGARH: The verdict is out: a majority of students of Panjab University (PU) have voted in favour of banning four-wheelers on campus, specifically in academic areas. PU may now soon stop students' four-wheelers from entering academic blocks. Out of the students participating in a survey conducted by the university, 53.2% voted in favour of making its Sector 14 vehicle-free, while 51.33% of the total student strength of the university said that Sector 25 should be free of four-wheelers. According to the results of the survey conducted by the university by placing special ballots alongside those for its student council polls, 3,315 have said students' four-wheelers shouldn't be allowed in academic areas of the Sector 14 campus. The remaining 2,916 said it was okay to permit vehicles. Though students voted in favour of a vehicle-free campus on the Sector 25 campus as well, there was only a small difference in the number of those for (3,034) and against (3,200) vehicles in the academic areas there. The results of the survey were likely to be used for taking a final call on traffic-related issues on the campus. "To begin with, we may use the survey to manage parking and traffic problems on the Sector 14 campus, since that is where it's more of a problem. We had specifically asked students if they were for banning student vehicles on campus and most of them have said yes," said PU dean student welfare Navdeep Goyal. While in isolation, not many students in Sector 25 wanted a ban on the vehicles on that campus, but the consolidated results showed more than half of the participants seeking no-entry for student vehicles in academic areas. "This could be because of the distance from the main campus. It would be problematic for these students to move from one campus to another," the DSW added. "The results of this survey will be sent to the registrar and a committee on traffic will take a decision accordingly," Goyal added. PU spokesperson Vineet Punia said a policy would be framed on the basis of these results. Box | Earlier survey PU had conducted a two-day survey last October on the traffic flow into the Sector 14 campus. It had revealed that nearly 23,000 vehicles were daily entering the university's main campus. In two days (October 27 and 28, 2014), the campus saw 45,190 vehicles entering through the university's three gates. These included over 19,500 cars and other four-wheelers and nearly 24,300 two-wheelers. Box | E-rickshaws to aid students? PU registrar Col G S Chadha (retd) said the university was considering the options of e-rickshaws and bus shuttles inside the academic areas of PU. Earlier, a committee consisting of PU registrar, dean students welfare Navdeep Goyal, chief security officer Jatinder Grover, PU Non-Teaching Employees Federation president Deepak Kaushik, the then PU Campus Students Council president Divyanshu Budhiraja had recommended the availability of e-rickshaws at Gates 1, 2 and 3 for the convenience of students and others. The committee has suggested that the e-rickshaw should be outsourced and their rates be approved by a standing committee.
