*[MTF] Personal experiences of use of Velib-the bicycle hiring system in
Paris by a transport economist Ms Gaele Lestevens which are3 very unusual
and interesting*

I am forwarding interesting experiences on use of Velib in Paris,
shared by Ms.Gaele Lesteven, of Sorbonne University, who worked with MESN
on her PhD thesis field work on motorists' response to increasing traffic
congestion in Sao Paolo, Paris & Mumbai. - 4 years back Velib experiences
are frfesh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gaele
: I decided to use the Velib and not my own bike because :

- it is cheap and I don't have to maintain it. If a tyre is flat, I put the
velib back to a station and "rotate the seat through 180 degrees so that it
is pointing backwards". (so the man would fix the velib, know that there is
a problem with this velib and other users know that this bike is not
properly working until the repairman fixes it. *It is a very efficient
informal regulation)*

- I can not park a bike inside my building (it is not allowed) and there is
a real problem of bicycle theft in Paris. Because of parking and theft
problems, I prefer the velib.( *and in Mumbai, people want free parking for
their cars day & night on the roads next to their house)*

- It is more flexible than my own bike. If it is starting to rain a lot
when I am at my office, I will take the metro and the following morning I
can take a velib again?

*I think this has been experimental attitude and she is providing vivid
picture of the use of velib. I think we should have more such case studies
for the usage of bikes, pedestrianjs, car sharfing and use of buses and
trains *

*this will enrch our knowledge in vivid mjanner*

*look fwd to your reactions *

Some people say that the Velib system contributes to encourage people to
use the bicycle again even to commute.

In fact, according to the household travel survey (called "enquête globale
transport"), *in 2001 there were 303 000 trips daily made by bicycle in the
Paris metropolitan region and in 2010 there are 652 000 daily trips made
by bicycle (among them, 255 000 are made within Paris city). **Can we
atleast count the number of such trips in Mumbai/Pune?*

*I hope you find these experiences are very vivid and useful. typically
showing her analytical approach *

The number of trips has doubled in 10 years (but it is still a small part
of the 41 millions of trips daily made in the Paris metropolitan region).

Among these trips made by bicycle, 29% are commuting trips.

In Paris city, according to this survey, in 2010, 43% of bicycle users use
the bicycle for commuting or professional trips.

Moreover, a third of 255 000 daily bicycle trips made within Paris city are
made by Velib.

We don't know precisely the part of commuters who shift to another mode to
the velib. It is probably former walkers or users of public transports.

According to an opinion survey made by the municipality of Paris in 2013,
about 30% of people who own a yearly Velib pass use the velib for
commuting. About 260 000 people own a yearly Velib. But for the survey,
only 302 yearly pass owners have been interviewed. So we don't know
precisely how many trips are daily made by Velib for commuting.

Please find attached some documents but there are in French.

Tell me if you have the answers about Velib you are expecting.

With love,

Gaele

I forgot to tell about the cons of the velib:

-its weight. It is quite heavy (about 20 kilos)

-its avalaibility. For example, where I live, it is hard to find a bike in
the morning after 9 am. Or if I take a Velib to meet friends in some
fancy neighborhoods in the evening, I know it will be hard to find a place
to park it.

Love,

Gaele
