The Gujarat High Court on Friday ordered the state government to place
security guards on the crossroads on Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)
corridors in the city.

Giving direction to install speedometers and fixing speed limit 50 km per
hour for public transport buses, the High Court disposed of a Public
Interest Litigation (PIL) that had sought its intervention to curb
accidents caused by rash driving by bus drivers and private vehicles in the
BRTS corridor.
The division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Jayant Patel disposed of the
PIL while directing the respondents — the state government, the Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation and the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, which manages BRTS
— to deploy security personnel at all the crossroads in order to keep
private commuters off the BRTS corridor.

Besides, the court has also directed the government agencies to install
speedometer in all its 200 buses in two months.

The petitioner Dhavnish Suthar, a contractor, had moved the PIL in the High
Court. Citing that there were over 50 accidents involving BRTS buses, the
petitioner had requested the court to issue direction to implement
Ahmedabad police commissioner’s notification that driving in BRTS corridors
was prohibited for private vehicles.

There have been rampant road accidents, many times fatal, involving BRTS
buses and private vehicles, leading to public outrage.

*In many instances, the buses were torched by public or were damaged
following the accidents.*
