To share a good news with you, the Supreme Court on Friday allowed one lakh autorickshaw permits to be issued in Delhi. Here is a news report link.

>>
>>Various newspapers reacted differently to it.  Some news reports suggest that the Government might opt for one owner- one permit policy what was struck down by Delhi High Court in Manushi case for cycle rickshaw sector. Other news reports indicate that the Government may choose to allow Corporate to run fleets.
>>It took fourteen years, a financier mafia and 5 lakh tag for a permit for the SC to realise what was wrong with its orders. Finally, Prabodh's message "Dilli maange more, permit chaaiye aur" got heard and one lakh permits are going released shortly. It is yet to be seen how government makes the best out of this opportunity.
>>
>>Although Prabodh is not a party to the ongoing case, we were following it closely and sent copies of documentaries to the stakeholders involved. We were closely coordinating with Nyayabhoomi on this matter, the credit also goes to them for working on it for so many years. There was almost consensus on increasing number of permits within the civil society. Our work was more focussed on making various stakeholders esp. commuters aware that the current mess was an unintended outcome of cap over the number of auto rickshaws in Delhi. The documentary "Third Wheel" was screened not only in colleges and to the rickshaw drivers but we also sent copies of documentaries to Bhurelal commitee, CSE, NGOs, RWAs, Transport department, Ministry of transport and the Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.
>>The work is not over yet, we have to make sure that the Government now allows branded dial-an-auto services than legislating one owner-one permit policy. Second, the policy of issueing permits must be transparent and third, fare-slabs should be diverse/ differntial and to an extent market-driven.
