The omnipresent traffic jams in the megacities of Asia and Latin America harm the environment through exhaust gases, noise and carbon dioxide emissions, lower the quality of life and paralyze economic growth. According to figures of the International Energy Agency, transport accounts for about 26% of energy consumption and is about 94% dependent on oil. The crude oil price has recently risen to more than $100 per barrel. This should induce or accelerate the rethinking in many metropolises. The following article, based on an interview with Manfred Breithaupt, head of the ‘Sustainable Urban Transport Project’ (SUTP) and Senior Transport Advisor of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), demonstrates options for cities to act now for sustainable urban transport.
