Can we count of "alternative fuels" to save the world?

Here we have an unusually perceptive piece from a specialist in chaos theory
who helps us make sense of the "alternative fuels" proposals and claims. It
is good to have Tom Konrad's hardheaded view not only on the potential role
and limitations of alternative fuels in our future transportation
arrangements, but also this opportunity to ponder his grim bet on a
"pessimistic, high-technology future", which he sees as a pattern of
lurching from crisis to crisis while cobbling together make-do solutions
which leave us as still basically functioning but not all that much more.
That I am afraid is the face of the future unless we are able to find the
vision and leadership to do otherwise.
