Module 5f: Adapting Urban Transport to Climate Change

Many transport decision-makers in developing countries are already
confronted with extreme weather events, such as flooding, subsidence and
storms, all of which are expected to increase with climate change. In
the worst case, transportation systems may not be able to recover
between such events, resulting in exponential damages. Hence, building a
climate-resilient urban transport system is vital to:

- Safeguard transport infrastructure and its embedded value;
- Ensure reliable mobility and economic vitality/development; and
- Guarantee the health and safety of urban residents.

This module of the GTZ Sourcebook for Decision-Makers in Developing
Cities is intended to raise awareness and describes the expected impacts
of climate change on urban passenger transport as well as possible
adaptation measures. It was formally launched on December 11 on a side
event at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP15).

Module 5a: Air Quality Management updated

Urban air pollution is a serious problem causing numerous unnoticed and
unaccounted fatalities. The transport sector is one of the major
contributors to the appalling air quality. Local authorities often
struggle to implement an effective Air Quality Management strategy to
tackle this problem.

The recently revised module 5a: Air Quality Management serves to assist
policy-makers and their advisors in developing countries. The module
helps to determine the best measures to abate air pollution with limited
information and provides practical advice to developing countries on
developing legally enforceable air quality standards and simplified
clean air implementation plans.
