Regarding the inquiry from Sarah Roberts:

The most recent issue of _Access: Research at the University of 
California Transportation Center_ (Spring 1997, number 10) includes a 
short article by Pnina Ohanna Plaut (<rsec792 at uvm. haifa.ac.il>) 
entitled "Telecommunication Vs. Transportation" in which she examines 
the question of whether or not the overlap of functions between the two 
means that telecommunications will substitute for transportation or 
stimulate increased demand for transportation. She uses European 
industrial trade and the freight sector in particular to answer this 
question.
