--  METRO SUBWAY HAS US$2 MILLION IN PROFITS.  Santiago's
subway company Metro had profits of US$1.5 million in the first half
of 1997, a 190 percent increase over the same period last year.
Metro transported a total of 88.5 million passengers for the first six
months of 1997, a 7.1 percent increase over the same period last
year.
Metro said that the newest transport route, Line 5, which
connects downtown's Plaza Italia with the municipality of La Florida,
transported a total of 6.8 million passengers since it first opened 
on April 5, which amounts to 11.9 percent of Metro's total passenger
count.
The company added that it will invest US$300 million in the
period 1997-2000.  US$20 million will be allocated for technological
renovations, US$120 million for 11 trains and US$160 million to
extend Line 5 towards downtown Santiago.
