Clark eyes trade deal with Chile as MPs vote on Singapore deal
07.11.2000 06:35
Parliament will today debate the free trade agreement with Singapore that the Prime Minister is expected to sign next week.
It is expected, with the backing of National, the deal will win the majority of parliament's approval.
The Government is looking at other trade blocs and Helen Clark says she will discuss one with Chile when its President pays an official visit to Auckland on Sunday.
Miss Clark says the issues for Chile in an agreement with New Zealand are more complex that Singapore as they have a heavily protected dairy industry but she is keen to get into talks with them.
President Ricardo Lagos will stop over in Auckland on his way to the APEC meeting in Brunei.
